MASTERPIECE

It is noticeable that this medallion, in addition to the black-brown colour of the line drawing and shadows, mainly contains yellow tones. This is often the case with such glass medallions. The yellow colour is a silver stain. Silver stain is made by applying a mixture of silver halide, also called silver salt, (sometimes silver oxide was used), clay powder and water to the back of the glass. Then, when the glass is fired, the silver particles penetrate the glass and give it a golden-yellow colour. The thicker the layer of silver stain, the more intense the final colour. In this way, different hues of yellow can be achieved. Moreover, the transparent yellow still allows a lot of light through. Such medallions were often contained in a window of a secular or private building.
