18de eeuwAlbum with patterns for stained-glass windows consisting of 180 sheets, some of which have disappeared (F. 27, 43, 73 and 74). Because of the signature and the year 1722 on the first folio, all drawings were attributed to the Ypres glassmaker Maarten de Lessuwe (c. 1700-1773). In the fragmentary preserved similar album (0000.GRO3110.II), two sheets bear a different signature: that of Karel de Stickere with year 1719 and that of Joos Friclo with the year 1740. The three years correspond to the time when the glass painters acquired mastery in the Bruges Guild of St. Luke. It is therefore assumed that this is a collection of patterns that served for master's proofs, especially since several drawings in the albums bear the coat of arms of the Guild of St. Luke. It seems as if not all the drawings originated in the same sequence, and perhaps they are the work of a number of successive deans of the guild from the first decades of the eighteenth century. Folios 149 to 180 appear to be patterns for tile floors rather than stained-glass windows.
