This tapestry depicts the seven liberal arts. On the far left is the winged Astrologia, astronomy, with an armillary sphere next to her. This is different from the separate Astrologia (XVII.1972.0056) tapestry, where her attribute is a celestial globe.
The armillary sphere is an instrument known since classical antiquity. A central sphere represents the earth, around which are mounted several rotating rings. These rings represent the heavens, as we see them from earth. Using an armillary sphere, the apparent movement of the universe can be demonstrated in an way that is understandable. In addition, the instrument can also be used to make calculations, such as when the sun rises or sets on a particular day, or the position of the stars at a specific moment.
