De minnetuin toont Ensors belangstelling voor de idyllische wereld van Antoine Watteau. De ets is opgedragen aan Flor Alpaerts, een Antwerps componist die in 1930 een suite had laten uitvoeren in het Oostendse Kursaal, waarvoor hij zich o.a. geïnspireerd had op Ensors minnetuin.
