15de eeuwMASTERPIECE
These painted shutters were part of an altarpiece intended for a new chapel that was put into use in 1474 by a convent of Augustinian nuns in Bruges, the so-called Black Sisters (after their black habits). The chapel was dedicated to Saint Ursula. The last of the eight scenes, bottom-right, differs from the rest, because it does not depict an event from Ursula’s life, but gives a glimpse into the Black Sisters’ own time. The distinguished citizens who are kneeling in front of the altar are probably benefactors who supported the convent’s expansion (including its furnishings, among which the altarpiece). On the altar, we see an image of Ursula as patron saint with a group of people under her cloak. Above it is a reliquary.
