In het midden van de voorstelling is de zuil van Marcus Aurelius afgebeeld, die op het moment dat deze prent werd gemaakt nog werd geïdentificeerd als de zuil van Antoninus. De zuil is omringd door modernere gebouwen en rechts op de voorgrond staat een fontein. De prent is gemaakt door Giovanni Battista Piranesi en behoort tot zijn reeks La Antichità Romane met gezichten op Romeinse oudheden. Deze prent is de eerste afbeelding van het eerste deel (John Wilton-Ely, Giovanni Battista Piranesi. The Complete Etchings, nr. 302).
